As I begin to prepare myself for my road in HGSE and thinking more about my future career, I know that I have always hoped to create equitable solutions in educational technology that have scalable impact.
I started this course off unsure of what to expect. As an international student born in Singapore and growing up in Shanghai, gender and sexuality is not commonly spoken about commonly or in academic settings.
I don’t think the concept of “equity” was ever taught to me specifically. It is simply something that I realized and understood over time from my social surroundings, school, and social media.
As an international asian woman studying in the United States, intersectionality has played a large role shaping my experience throughout my undergraduate years. It did not really shape my experiences from my K-12 years because I grew up in a relatively homogenous culture whereby the people that I was surrounded with in school were largely heterosexual Asian people.
Growing up, the gender binary has always been very much enforced, not just in my individual and social interactional levels of family and peers, but also structural levels like schools.
